Rounderz: one-tap cash rounding for Shopify POS
Cash sales end in awkward totals. Rounderz adds a POS tile your staff tap to round to the nearest 5¢ or 10¢ - discount-safe and tax-accurate to the cent.
The problem it solves
A cash sale rings up at $10.02. The customer hands over a ten and a nickel, the cashier hunts for three pennies that are not in the drawer, and the line behind them waits. At the end of the shift the till is short by a handful of coppers nobody can account for, because pennies get rounded by hand and hand-rounding is not recorded anywhere.
Several countries have withdrawn their smallest coin entirely, which makes cash rounding not a convenience but a requirement. Shopify POS has no built-in way to do it, so most shops either eat the difference informally or add a manual discount line and hope the tax stays right.
What Rounderz does
Rounderz puts a tile on the POS smart grid. On a cash sale, staff tap it once and the total snaps to the nearest 5¢ or 10¢:
- Rounding up adds a non-taxable adjustment, so you are not charging tax on a rounding artefact.
- Rounding down applies a discount, which is the correct mechanism for reducing a total that has already been taxed.
- Existing discounts survive. A staff discount or a loyalty discount already on the cart is never overwritten, which is the failure mode of doing this by hand.
- A live preview shows the rounded total before it is committed, so the cashier can read it out with confidence.
- The increment is set per register, so a location that needs 5¢ and one that needs 10¢ can coexist under one account.
Who it is for
Any Shopify POS retailer taking meaningful cash volume, and specifically those operating where the penny has been withdrawn from circulation. Cafes, bakeries, market stalls, bottle shops, corner stores - anywhere a queue forms and the average basket is small enough that coin handling is a real fraction of transaction time.
The value is in three places at once: the queue moves faster, the drawer reconciles to what the customer actually handed over, and the rounding is recorded as a line item rather than as a discrepancy.

Common questions
Does rounding break my tax reporting?
No. Rounding up uses a non-taxable adjustment so no tax is charged on the added amount, and rounding down uses a discount, which Shopify already handles correctly for tax. The adjustment appears on the order, so it is auditable rather than invisible.
What happens to a discount that is already on the cart?
It stays. Rounderz will not overwrite a staff or loyalty discount that has already been applied - that is the specific behaviour it was built to guarantee.
Can different locations use different increments?
Yes. The increment is configured per register, so 5¢ at one location and 10¢ at another is a supported setup.
Does it apply to card sales too?
It is designed for cash, where the coin actually has to change hands. Card and digital payments settle to the exact cent, so there is nothing to round.
