Tillwise: cash reconciliation with blind counts and per-staff variance

Shopify tells you what should be in the drawer. Tillwise tells you what actually happened - who counted, what they counted, and how far that count landed from what was expected.

The problem it solves

A till that closes short is a question with no answer attached. The register session says the drawer is down, but not which of the people who used it that day did the count, whether the drawer was opened outside a sale, or whether this register has been drifting for a month.

The count itself is often the weak link. When staff can see the expected total before they count, counting turns into confirming: the number that gets entered is the number on the screen, and a drawer that is short still gets recorded as correct. A single typed-in total also leaves nothing to go back to when the figures disagree.

What Tillwise does

Tillwise is a control layer on top of Shopify POS's own cash tracking, not a second system beside it. Counts and drawer movements are written into Shopify's native cash ledger, so your register-session reports stay correct, while Tillwise keeps the detail those reports do not: denominations, who was pinned in, and who approved what.

At the till

  • Count into a denomination sheet in your store's currency, with the expected total held back until the count is submitted.
  • Log drops, payouts, paid-ins, and no-sale drawer opens, each with a reason code and attributed to whoever was pinned in at the time.
  • Optionally require a manager PIN before the drawer opens outside a sale, or before a shift can be closed.
  • Print the shift report right at the register.

In the admin

  • See variance by shift, register, location, and staff member, ranked by absolute variance rather than net - a till that is $50 over on Monday and $50 short on Tuesday nets to zero while $100 went unaccounted for.
  • Get a daily summary email of the previous day's shifts, variance, and who counted.
  • Export shift records to CSV for your bookkeeper.
  • On the Chain plan, get an email the moment a count misses your variance limit, naming the register and the person who counted.

Who it is for

Shopify POS retailers who take cash, especially where several people share a drawer over the course of a day, where a manager needs to sign off on no-sale opens, or where a till keeps coming up short and nobody can say why. Multi-location retailers can compare variance across stores on the Chain plan.

One requirement to know up front: variance reporting needs Shopify POS Pro, because variance is measured against the register sessions POS Pro provides. Blind counts and drawer logging still work without it.

Pricing

Three plans, each adding to the one below. Every plan includes the whole counting workflow at the till - the plans differ on locations and oversight, never on whether your staff can close out a drawer.

  • Starter - $5/month or $50/year: one location, blind counts, drawer logging, printed shift reports, and 30 days of history
  • Pro - $29/month or $290/year: up to 5 locations, variance by staff, manager PIN, daily summary email, 1 year of history, and CSV export
  • Chain - $99/month or $1,000/year: unlimited locations, instant short alerts, cross-location variance, and closing a register shift remotely from the admin

Every plan includes a 14-day free trial, and paying yearly saves 16-17%.

Common questions

Can staff see the expected total while they count?

No. With blind counts on, the expected total is not sent to the POS device until the count has been submitted. It is withheld on the server rather than hidden on screen, so there is nothing to confirm against until the count is in.

Do I need Shopify POS Pro?

For variance reporting, yes. Variance is measured against Shopify's register sessions, which POS Pro provides. Blind counts and drawer logging still work without it, and the app explains why variance is unavailable rather than showing an empty report.

Does it replace Shopify's cash tracking?

No, it builds on it. Counts and drawer movements go into Shopify's native cash ledger, so your POS reports stay correct. Tillwise keeps the extra detail - denominations, who was pinned in, and manager approvals - in its own audit trail.

How does Tillwise know who counted?

Each count is attributed to the staff member pinned into POS at the time. Shopify does not let public apps read a store's staff list, so you give each person a name on Tillwise's Staff names screen once they have used a till.

Does it work across multiple locations?

Starter covers one location and Pro covers up to five. Chain has no location limit and adds variance compared across locations.
